Massaro Farm Gives Back to the Community Through Food Donations

Massaro Community Farm
Here at CT NOFA we believe that having access to healthy, organic food grown locally should not just be a privilege reserved to a small population of citizens. That's why we LOVE hearing when local farms work to provide local food to as many people as they can; Massaro Community Farm has done so through their inspiring food donation program.

Steve Munno of Masaro Farm
Massaro Community Farm, located in Woodbridge, CT, makes 'Feeding People' a primary part of its mission. This might seem perfunctory for an organic vegetable farm. But for Massaro it means more than just providing quality produce to its customers. Each year, the farm donates at least 10% of what it grows to hunger relief partners in the community. In the farm’s first season in 2010, this amounted to several hundred pounds of produce. But thanks to Farm Manager Steve Munno's talents, the expansion of acreage under cultivation, and prime growing conditions, food donations in 2013 are expected to top 8,000 pounds. This translates into local, organic produce reaching those who need it most, and who, in the past, might have been limited to receiving calorie-heavy packaged foods. Massaro has maintained a direct relationship with our donor recipients. In past years, Massaro Farm has donated produce to Woodbridge Senior Services, Columbus House, New Haven Farms, BH Care in Ansonia, and Jewish Family Services. In 2013, they have added the Ansonia Salvation Army to their list of recipients.

Massaro Community Farm also continues to ‘Build Community’ through its offerings of adult beekeeping and organic land care workshops, annual events, a summer camp each August, and its newest feature, education-based school field trips. For more information, please visit the farm’s website: www.massarofarm.org or call (203) 736-8618.

  3. Fantastic blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Many thanks!
